He worked for twenty-five years at \u003ci\u003eNewsweek\u003c\/i\u003e, rising to become the magazine's first African American top editor (1998-2006). Subsequently, Whitaker worked in television news as Washington Bureau Chief for \u003ci\u003eNBC News\u003c\/i\u003e and Managing Editor of \u003ci\u003eCNN Worldwide\u003c\/i\u003e. He is currently an Emmy Award-winning Contributing Correspondent for\u003ci\u003e \u003c\/i\u003eCBS\u003ci\u003e Sunday Morning\u003c\/i\u003e. Whitaker's first book, \u003ci\u003eMy Long Trip Home\u003c\/i\u003e, was a finalist for the \u003ci\u003eLos Angeles Times\u003c\/i\u003e Book Prize, and he has since written four more books. He is a judge for the Peabody Awards, the John Chancellor Award, and was previously a juror for the duPont\/Columbia Awards.
