Sail into the great age of naval warfare and discover the life of one of history's most celebrated sea commanders.

In Life of Lieut.-Admiral de Ruyter, author and military historian G. Grinnell-Milne recounts the extraordinary career of Michiel de Ruyter, the legendary Dutch naval hero whose victories helped secure the power and independence of the Dutch Republic during the seventeenth century. Revered in the Netherlands as one of the greatest admirals of all time, de Ruyter rose from humble beginnings to command fleets in some of the most dramatic naval conflicts of the age.

Set against the backdrop of the Anglo-Dutch Wars and the fierce struggle for control of global trade and the seas, the book vividly recreates the great naval battles, daring expeditions, and political rivalries that defined the era. Readers follow de Ruyter through campaigns against England and France, including the famous Raid on the Medway, one of the most daring naval operations in European history. Grinnell-Milne captures both the strategic brilliance and personal character of a commander admired for his courage, discipline, and loyalty.

Written in a lively and engaging style, Life of Lieut.-Admiral de Ruyter combines biography, naval history, and adventure to bring the seventeenth-century maritime world vividly to life. The book offers fascinating insight into the age of sailing warships, expanding empires, and international rivalry on the world's oceans.

This carefully restored reprint revives a compelling historical biography for modern readers. Ideal for lovers of naval history, maritime adventure, and European history, Life of Lieut.-Admiral de Ruyter remains an inspiring account of one of the greatest admirals ever to command a fleet and a central figure in the golden age of Dutch sea power.

George Grinnell-Milne (1853-1931) was a British author, translator, and man of letters best remembered for his naval biography Life of Lieut.-Admiral de Ruyter, first published in London in 1896.George Grinnell-Milne came from a well-connected British family associated with commerce and finance, and later became a merchant banker. In addition to his historical writing, Grinnell-Milne also published literary and poetic works, including "Tales from Tasso, and Other Poems and Translations" (1909). His interest in Dutch history can, however, be traced to his marriage in 1882 at The Hague, Netherlands, to the Dutch woman Maria Caroline Mess. Basing themselves in London, the couple went on to have four children, the most famous of whom was Captain Duncan Grinnell-Milne, the distinguished Royal Flying Corps pilot, war ace, and later aviation author. The similarity of their names has occasionally caused confusion between the two men, but they belonged to different generations and pursued different careers.
