by William T. Sherman (Author)

In 1875, ten years after the end of the Civil War, Sherman became one of the first Civil War generals to publish his memoirs. The Memoirs of General William T. Sherman began with the year 1846 (when the Mexican War began) and ended with a chapter about the military lessons of the Civil War. Sherman steadfastly refused to be drawn into party politics, and his memoirs became one of the best-known first-hand accounts of the Civil War.

In the years immediately after the war, Sherman was popular in the North and well-regarded by his own soldiers. At the same time, he was generally respected in the South as a military man, while his conservative politics were attractive to many white Southerners. In the early 20th century, Sherman's role in the Civil War attracted attention from influential British military intellectuals, including Field Marshal Lord Wolseley, Maj. Gen. J. F. C. Fuller, and especially Capt. Liddell Hart.
